DESCRIPTION:
Highly recommended.. Strycker, an accomplished birder, writes entertainingly about spending three exciting and strenuous months in Antarctica helping a research team study utterly charming Adélie penguins
The Adélie Penguins who call Antarctica home have been the subject of long-term studies--scientists may know more about how these penguins will adjust to climate change than about any other creature in the world. His subjects: more than a quarter million penguins. The year he graduated from college, twenty-two-year-old Noah Strycker was dropped by helicopter in a remote Antarctic field camp with two other bird scientists and a three-months supply of frozen food. Among Penguins Birders, lovers of the Antarctic, and fans of first-person adventure narratives will be fascinated by Strycker's book.. He recounts the reality of life at the end of the Earth--thousand-year-old penguin mummies, hurricane-force blizzards, and day-to-day existence in below freezing temperatures--and delves deep into a world of science, obsession, and birds. With wit, curiosity, and a deep knowledge of his subject, Strycker weaves a captivating tale of penguins and their researchers on
Catbird said Brrr! A fabulous, fast and fascinating read.. Better Strycker than me! You couldn't pay me enough to hang out in a tent for three months on the ice in Antarctica, but I happily lived vicariously through "bird man's" adventures.Along the way, I learned a thing or two, and you will too. For instance: Did you know that penguin carcasses mummify in the cold dry air, so that in the giant penguin colony at Cape Crozier, you literally walk on top of dead penguins that are hundreds of years old?. "An excellent adventure with penguins and people" according to OregonReview. I just finished "Among Penguins." A wonderful read, full of oddball facts (that fancy cold-weather clothing is lined with *coyote* fur?!). If you want to know which penguin once received a knighthood, and from which king, this book is for you. Likewise how to make yogurt when you are camped on an ice sheet, and how to deal with a case of what my mother called the "back door trots" when you are in the middle of a penguin colony -- I have never. Easy Read, Great Book! At a young age, Noah Strycker is already making a name for himself in the world of birds. This book is written in a style that sucks you in and makes you part of the excitement and adventure captured in the eyes of a young scientist in a world few of us would ever think of venturing into. Noah's writing makes you feel like you are reading an adventure novel, while you absorb and learn about a fascinating part of the natural world. It is writt
