What a gift to read this incredible story from Michael Collins I had heard that Collins' book would be the best way to feel what it was like to be with NASA during the 60's. I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who enjoys learning about space flight. I already knew that the astronauts were great pilots and engineers, but this book reveals the author's incredible warmth and humor. Collins really does an amazing job of providing deep insight into the jobs he held, while making it completely accessible and entertaining to the reader. It is not often for a reader to feel like they are being given a gift while reading a book, and that is exactly how I have felt while reading Carrying. "Best book written by an astronaut--period!" according to M. Chomer. My title says it all. I have previously reviewed this wonderful book but loaned out my precious copy and never got it back so I found another one so I'll keep this short and sweet. This is a wonderful book written by a wonderful astronaut who flew on Gemini X as well as Apollo 11. He was offered the chance to command Apollo 17 (and thus walk on the moon) but declined because of the grind of training. He wrote this book without the help of a ghost writer and I couldn't be happier! The descriptions of walking in space, his fellow astronauts, circling the moon, training, etc and top notch. If you have to pick one book to read abou. "Collins holds his own" according to Anonymous. I can't believe that I hadn't read this book earlier. Michael Collins provides a wonderful mix of technical information, humor, honesty, and poetry in this account of his early days flying and his time as a NASA astronaut in the Gemini and Apollo programs. Not too lofty for those unfamiliar with aerospace history, engineering, or jargon - he explains things in a very down-to-earth manner that makes it easy to understand. Lovely read if you want to hear about the first guy to bravely orbit the Moon alone.

The years that have passed since Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins piloted the Apollo 11 spacecraft to the moon in July 1969 have done nothing to alter the fundamental wonder of the event: man reaching the moon remains one of the great events--technical and spiritual--of our lifetime. In Carrying the Fire, Michael Collins conveys, in a very personal way, the drama, beauty, and humor of that adventure. He also traces his development from his first flight experiences in the air force, through his days as a test pilot, to his Apollo 11 space walk, presenting an evocative picture of the joys of flight as well as a new perspective on time, light, and movement from someone who has seen the fragile Earth from the other side of the moon.
