DESCRIPTION:
Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, it's a book that will touch LGBTQ readers and others, revealing, with candor and insight, that gender comes in more than two sizes.Ivan E. Coyote and Rae Spoon are accomplished, award-winning writers, musicians, and performers; they are also both admitted "gender failures." In their first collaborative book, Ivan and Rae explore and expose their failed attempts at fitting into the gender binary, and how ultimately our expectations and assumptions around traditional gender roles fail us all.Based on their acclaimed 2012 live show that toured across the United States and in Europe, Gender Failure is a poignant collection of autobiographical essays, lyrics, and images documenting Ivan and Rae's personal journeys from gender failure to gender enlightenment. Rae's first book, First Spring Grass Fire, was a Lambda Literary Award finalist in 2013.. Coyote is the autho
"Excellent exploration of gender and gender roles from two wonderful, and wonderfully different, storytellers" according to Rachel Kramer Bussel. I can't say enough good things about this book. Firstly, it's written by two authors, who each have different lived experiences and approaches to gender. Though they both reject our culture's insistence on a gender binary system and both share many commonalities, having two writing styles and approaches makes for an interesting read that never gets complacent. Secondly, the short format, which Ivan Coyote has mastered (do go read everything else Coyote has written too, because the use of language is so wonderfully succinct), means "big" topics like c. thisworldisfullofcrashingbores said Got me through another day of trans angst. And it was also great to see writing (one of Rae's vignettes) which discussed dating men back when they identified as a trans man. There are all too few books that recognise the fact that not all trans men (or assigned female at birth non binary people) date women.Anyway, this book was a wonderful series of anecdotes told by Rae and Ivan about how they came to identify as "gender failures" and how this has shaped their writing, music, and interactions with others in a cis-centric and often infuriating world hell-bent on enforcing the gender binary. I. Dr. J. B. Miller said Fantastic read!. I wish that I could see a live performance by Ivan Coyote and Rae Spoon. In lieu of that, this book was fantastic. I found out about the book when one of Ivan's essays ("Fear and Loathing in Public Bathrooms, or How I Learned to Hold My Pee") was excerpted in Slate. The rest of the essays in "Gender Failure" are equally as good. Ivan and Rae invite you into their lives and share their experiences with them. Because I am a "gender failure," I found this book particularly helpful. I have already suggested it to friends, and my spouse plans to read it s
"Ivan and Rae have written a magical, down-to-earth, painfully honest step beyond any predetermined transgender narrative that I know of. At times hilarious, at times heartbreaking, their storytelling is top-notch. This book is unputdownable." —Kate Bornstein, author of A Queer and Pleasant Danger"Brutally honest, tenderly funny and totally real, this multimedia collaboration makes for a dynamic, beautiful and important piece of literature." —Michelle Tea, author of Valencia
