DESCRIPTION:
I love seeing our world through your eyes Patrice Perillie What can I say about a book that is so near and dear to my own heart except Gracias Compañero! I love seeing our world through your eyes! Thank you for capturing these dyeing and dying traditions before they disappearThese weavers and spinners and dyers and embroiderers and storytellers will live on forever in your beautiful photographs! Así sea!. For the love of Oaxacan traditions Eric Mindling, originally from the US, has made his home in Oaxaca for decades and as a tour guide has explored many corners of this vast Mexican state. As a weaver I expected to love the photos of the traditional clothing and I did. He has taken powerful photos of people in settings of their choice and the backgrounds range from humble homes to old churches and stunning landscapes. Their varied styles of dress will soon disappear but the photos will remain as documentation.I expected the the text to focus on weaving but as Eric explains in the beginning, he is not an expert on textil. "Fantastic book about traditional Oaxacan clothing" according to Jeanette Heard. I was thrilled to finally see this book. I had been following Eric Mindling's posts on facebook as he traveled through Oaxaca and photographed traditional clothing for a couple of years. It was worth the wait. The photographs are fantastic and evoke the people and land as well as documenting the clothing traditions. I have been to some of the areas on one of Eric's Traditions Mexico tours and enjoyed seeing photographs from there as well as areas far more remote. The text is a wonderful background to the photographs. For anyone who loves Mexico, people, spinning, weaving,or traditiona
Eric Mindling captures this vanishing world with artistry and respect, and just in the nick of time. Oaxaca Stories in Cloth includes more than 175 sensitive, intimate, full-color portraits of traditional people of the Oaxacan hinterlands who continue to wrap themselves in the clothing that expresses their ancient, living culture. This book offers a window into a vanishing culture where few people have the opportunity to go.
A glorious book." —Wade Davis, author, photographer, National Geographic Explorer, Professor of Anthropology at University of British Columbia. "An exquisitely beautiful account of a people and a textile tradition that is the perfect expression of their past, the embodiment of their present, and the symbol of their cultural survival as they chart their way forward
