DESCRIPTION:
Great History Conrad Cheatham Tom Fetters has produced a very good, concise history of one of America's first railroads - the Charleston & Hamburg. The year by year format is very helpful and gives a quick overview of this railroad. Fetters is an accomplished rail historian and has produced works on other Southeastern railroads. This book is illustrated with photographs, drawings, and maps to better explain the text. It is a worthy successor to the more scholarly work on the Charleston & Hamburg/South Ca. "Extensive history" according to Michael. Man what a great book! Of course this is to be expected from Thomas Fetters, his previous books on railroads in South Carolina are excellent. There are some great maps, photos, and diagrams in this that really blew me away. The books goes into more than just the early Charleston & Hamburg Railroad that people associate with The Best Friend of Charleston. I learned a lot about lines that go essentially through my back yard that I had never heard of!Highly recommended for anyo. "America's first long passenger and freight railroad" according to Lady Of the Dark Tower. This is a great book all about that first American railroad. Fine illustrations, and very good research, many nice details. This books is great for railroad buffs, as well as people interested in early South carolina history. I bought several others, but this one is the very best for accuracy and detail.

This volume by historian Thomas Fetters presents a fresh new look at the development and operations of America's premier railroad, including surprising information about key players and newly discovered stories about the railroad's role in the American Civil War. Many claim that the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was the first in the United States, but in reality the Charleston & Hamburg was the first to provide regular service to passengers when it opened its doors in Charleston, South Carolina, on Christmas Day 1830. It would ultimately carry people and goods from the Lowcountry to what is now north Augusta. A comprehensive account of the Charleston & Hamburg's history from its inception through Reconstruction, The Charleston & Hamburg, with its forgotten stories of America's premier railroad, is a necessary addition to the bookshelves of historians and rail fans alike!
