DESCRIPTION:
The Wright brothers' accomplishments were not lucky accidents and theirs is a wonderful story about the power of individuals and the scientific method. It is structured around three fundamental questions: What is the problem of flight? In 1899, what was known? How did the Wright brothers do it?. This thirteen-chapter book is written at the same intellectual level as was used by the Wright brothers. On December 17th, 1903 two bicycle mechanics' from Dayton, Ohio achieved the first powered man-carrying flight that was sustained and controlled
Erika S. said My husband really enjoyed. I purchased this for my husband. The author was his professor at UMD in Duluth, Minnesota. He's enjoyed the book. Lots of engineering information. My husband is an engineer and he loved all that information.. Terrific read! I found this gem in a bargain bin and I'm surprised there aren't more reviews here given how much of an interesting read it was. Garber takes us on a fascinating voyage and asks the question: How did two bicycle mechanics with only a high school education solve one of the most difficult engineering challenges in the world at the time, and one that had killed or injured almost everyone who had previously attempted it? Along the way we learn that pioneering breakthroughs like the invention of flight are typically brought about only through sheer determina. Michel Jobé said From a technical point of view. This book looks at how the Wright Brothers achieved flight through a detailed technical analysis of their work, including many mathematical formulaes and tables. It thus requires a certain level of knowledge to be read. A must have for those interested in the engineering aspects of flight, but only for those!
