A good reference This textbook is good as a very dense reference to communication systems. The text is a little confusing at times, but with some supplementals it is a good learning experience. The book is not for those new to communications. Some background on the subject would be beneficial before reading this text.. Surprisingly good Surprisingly good for a comm. theory text. It's fairly comprehensive and the writing is clear and accessible (rather than being overly dry). The authors clearly know how to write, which is always helpful in a book that has to contain so many mathematical treatments.Of course, you won't be able to pick this up and run straight out of the tenth grade (unless you're special) but it's pretty decent as textbooks go.

Motivates learning through practical applications––from the Internet, to networks, to the common radio––and a historical background of communication systems. It is filled with an abundance of insightful examples, problems, and computer experiments. Includes an abundance of examples worked out in detail, to help students develop an intuitive grasp of the theory in addition to MATLAB experiments.
