DESCRIPTION:
Charles Darwin (1809-1882) changed the world forever with his 1859 publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Darwin: A Celebration of His Controversial Life and Legacy is an anthology of critical writings that grew out of a lecture series, hosted by Auburn University, held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the first edition of his most famous book.Ideas in The Origin of Species reordered the biological sciences forever, spawned new disciplines including evolutionary psychology, sociobiology, and evolutionary developmental biology, became foundational for modern biomedical research an
What's with this Charles Darwin guy? Many have come before who have changed the thinking in the world, such as Galileo, Martin Luther (and much later, Martin Luther King), and perhaps, though the jury is still out, our current Pope Francis. Certainly one such person, a person born about 200 years ago, a person whose science, though accepted by scientists, is still controversial in the religious world, is Charles Darwin. This book examines this controversy.. Lovingly compiled and enumerated Tanner the Seeker Darwin did not just move biology forward. What Darwin accomplished was the demonstration that top down explanations cannot pass the test of scientific rigor. This is important for the entire enterprise of science, not only Biology. This anthology goes a long way to demonstrate this, especially the lesson Darwin has taught cosmologists. Fine-tuning has made it tempting to infer design in the formation of the universe, but thankfully mainstream physicists have avoided that weak intellectual escape. This anthology is wonderful because. Robert D. Bradley said Darwin from all points of view. Excellent and thoughtful contributors and well edited. Darwin from every point of view except those who blindly deny evolution. A reference for schools.
