DESCRIPTION:

But in 1948, the Columbia River levees burst, and the entire town was washed away. Over time, the track was improved and extended by the local racing community, and its name soon changed to Portland International Raceway (PIR). Trans-Am, IMSA, CART, Champ Car, ALMS, and, of course, NASCAR have all raced at PIR, and the Rose Cup is going strong into its sixth decade.. What followed was the development of the only major road racing circuit located inside the borders of a major American city. In the spring of 1961, the Portland Rose Festival Association and Cascade Sports Car Club decided to hold a sports car race on the old blacktop. The Rose Cup races established the viability of West Delta Park as a road racing circuit. Throughout the 1950s, these streets were known for clandestine racing. When the waters receded, only the streets of the town remained. In the months following Pearl Harbor, an area of swampy land north of Portland, Oregon, was transformed into shipyard housing, and within six months, Vanport became the fifth-largest city in Oregon

Lots of memories I bought two copies, one for myself one for my grandson. It's great to see the mixture of the old and the new. I enjoy looking at the photos from my era of driving, and I hope my grandson someday understands that three generations of his family have enjoyed great times there (hoping for many more generations to follow).Even someone with only a passing interest in PIR will enjoy the book.. Portland International Raceway I thoroughly enjoyed the research that went into the writing of our local raceway. Photos were included that I'd never seen before. Adding photos of current local races added to the fun! I'm proud to be a part of the racing family that loves PIR!Well done, Jeff!~Shirley SandersRed Sign Estate Sales & AppraisalsPortland, Oregon
