Nicole Kroger said I want this book!. I loved this book! It's one of those books that I really wanted to make last longer. I started reading it when I was pregnant with my first child and tried to read it as slowly as possible so that I would have some left to read when in hospital after the birth. Ha ha :-) Needless to say, that did not happen. I had not realised how much time a newborn demanded. But I did finish it in the weeks after he was born. . "Wonderful" according to Delene Fry. As a South African, this book had a special meaning for me. A friend gave me the book to read but as it was a library book it had to be returned. I tried buying my own copy in South Africa but it was out of print .I was ecstatic when I found it on Amazon even though it was second hand. A lovely book seeing I love cooking too!

Zuretha Roos draws on the memories of the abundant farm kitchens of her Hex River Valley childhood, happy Stellenbosch student days and the, sometimes challenging, world of marriage and young motherhood in seventies' Johannesburg to become an accomplished cook and magazine food editor. All is blissful, if not a little chaotic, until immense tragedy strikes and her once happy family has to come to terms with a brutal twist of fateWoven together with trusted family recipes, these tales bring to mind a time when history was shaped over strong cups of coffee and food came from the earth, the ocean and a mother's heart.. In amongst the pots and pans, busy city life is pleasantly interrupted by holidays in Kleinmond, idyllic sojourns at Keurboomstrand and weekends on an isolated farm in the Waterberg. Three generations of a South African family come to life in this warm memoir of cozy kitchens, memorable places, quirky characters and soul food

From the Author The single review on "Saffron Pear Tree" was actually wonderful, and I thank the reviewer. But she must have therefore made a mistake by allocating it 1 star! I wish she'd come back, as I'm sure she meant to give it far more stars!
