DESCRIPTION:
WHOOSH! is the sound heard by survivors of the deadly 1987 fire in London's Kings Cross Underground station - it is also the last sound heard be many of the victims who in a matter of seconds were blasted off their feet by the red hot smoke that blew up the escalators that evening. The deadly heat and speed of the fire baffled all firemen, researchers and scientists but eventually it was erroneously blamed on trench effect even though that did not explain the curious burn pattersn on the dead bodies or on the walls and did not explain the distorted and burned metal of the fire.WHOOSH! will show survivors and relatives, their lawyers and the police, fire and safety officers what really happened and why it was so devastating.WHOOSH! is also intended as a guide to the world's architects, designers, engineers and traveller who may have reason to be aware of the peculiar nature of fires in tunnels and especially those in underground railways.
Good scientific work If anyone thinks this is a book about the disaster, they'll be half right. It is actually a rebuttal treatise against the prevailing theory of why the fire occurred and what really happened. While it was ponderous going sometimes (Press, Ram, Firetube, Quietblast--huh?), the author tries to explain everything in accessible ways and succeeds in blowing the "trench effect" out of the water, in my opinion. Although the disaster is unlikely to occur again because the wo. Dorothy Goyer said One Star. Don't waste your money. Only talks about mechanics and nothing about the actual day of fire or aftermath.
