DESCRIPTION:

"There is simply no better book for the purpose of giving students a clear understanding, in a concise format, of how to conceptualize and then work with a client. The text is thorough in its discussion of the topics the author has chosen to address. Further, this is the best book I've seen for giving students opportunities to practice specific skills.""The exercises offered are "first rate" in aiding helpers in their skill development. The updated information about issues in current practice and health coverage are also excellent." . The author often takes a more conversational tone which seems to lead to a more ready understanding of the material presented.""This text is excellent in conceptualizing the process and sequencing activities. The questions suggested for each stage are very good

The Kindle version of this book is awfully. The pages look as if someone just slapped them down on a scanner, scanned them to a digital format, and uploaded them. The publisher gave no thoughts to aligning the digital pages with the pages of the actually book. Navigating through the chapters is a nightmare with the index function which would normally be used to at least navigate from chapt. Insightful and useful book, but lacks multi-cultural flavor. espie@gene.com Okuns's book provides a strong counseling model that practioners can follow. I found her exercises and examples particularly helpful and seemingly useful. However, her model is based on an affective,western;client-centered model. Many of the techniques suggested would be difficult to apply to clients of diverse populations. If you decide to buy this book, consider purchasing her other book
