DESCRIPTION:
This book provides an in-depth review of the progress made in fighter aircraft design since World War I. Major design topics such as requirements, aerodynamics, avionics, armaments, and tactics are all covered in this invigorating study. Ray Whitford examines present and future design solutions against the historic background of fighter evolution that occurred whenever science and engineering increased the aircraft designer's parameters. Each chapter focuses on an aspect of fighter technology, chronologically tracing its progress. Anyone who wants to gain an understanding of the fascinating interplay of forces that has sculpted the modern fighter should read this book.
He is the author of over sixty papers and articles on aircraft design.. Ray Whitford is a chartered engineer and has been Senior Lecturer in Aerodynamics and Aircraft Design with Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom for twenty years. He won the Rolls-Royce Award for Best Propulsion Submission in the Royal Aeronautical Society's 1997 Aerospace Journalist of the Year Awards and a similar prize in 2005 for Best Technology Submission
not too shabby This book has lots of history, even about WWI & 20's-30's fighter aircraft. Unfortunately, the author is British so much of the history focuses on British and German aircraft, which most Americans (including myself) are probably unfamiliar with. The color photos are nice and overall technical content is enlightening. I do feel that the book would benefit from a chapter of technical material explaining things such as wing-loading and its. The history and science of designing fighter aircraft Rottenberg's rotten book review "Fundamentals of Fighter Design" is one of two books written by aerodynamicist Ray Whitford that survey the anatomy of fighter aircraft. As in his older book "Design for Air Combat", Whitford breaks down the various areas that make up an airplane - the aerodynamics, power plants, avionics, weapons and weapons systems and control systems. (Not being an aerodynamics expert by profession or training, I have yet to complete the denser "Desi. "Misleading title but otherwise good book" according to Ong Tso Sheng. A more appropriate title would have been "history of fighter design" Does not truly cover design fundamentals - more like a history of its development. Does note provide any new insights on aircraft design or an in depth look at how different tactics/ operations/ stratergy affected fighter design and how these needs and requirements were met with which design philosophy.
