A short must-read for every school board member! As a veteran teacher, I recognized every single one of Mr. Jackson's students. If you stay in the profession long enough, you will encounter them as well. As the other reviewers have stated, it's a short readan afternoon will do it. It's hard to put down, because each story/chapter is so short, so well-written, and so well-paced, you keep saying to yourself, "OK - I have time for one more chapter". It's like trying to eat one Lays potato chip! "Ooooo! This looks intriguing"and you're already reading the next one.Buy a copy for each of your county's school board members. At LEAST recommend it to them! Who knows? I. "Interesting vignettes, but too self-congratulatory." according to Paul Krissel. There are many tough schools to teach in, in all sizes of communities. Though the author starts with the caveats that this is one person's very short experience in one school, his narrative still lectures us in a way that seems too self-serving.The author is at his best when describing individual student situations. The reader can empathize with both the teacher and the students, many of whom have little support at home or among their peers to strive for excellence. He also does well when describing mentors hip he received from other teachers. Those passages are engaging.The author is at his worst when he becomes. Entertaining and Insightful BellaB After reading Schooled you will have an idea of what our high school teachers face on a daily basis, from the students, the administration and the parents. And you will understand the reasons why the really good teachers are leaving the profession. It sounds as if Mr. Jackson is an excellent teacher and I truly hope he will continue his teaching career at the college level. Another book perhaps? To sum up: This is a page-turner. Schooled is one of those books that you just can not put down. Very highly recommended!
