Yes, it was a long title, but Dover is doing a disservice to old book collectors by changing the titles. That said, it is a good collection of examples that could be easily adapted for today's living, especially for those who want a not-so-big house. The cover says that there are 254 houses and each are shown. and beautiful photos (my favorites being the Spanish villas) are very Authentic Small Houses of the Twenties by Robert T. Jones is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early September.Before becoming a Dover edition in 1987, this 2016 reissue (with graphics and text in 92% scale) was published in 1929 by the Architects' Small House Service Bureau, Inc. Its floor plans, exterior design options, formal yet promising descriptions, and beautiful photos (my favorites being the Spanish villas) are very inspiring and translate well to the present era's small house movement.
But not all prospective homeowners could easily afford the services of an architect, so the nonprofit Architects' Small House Service Bureau was organized in the 1920s to provide plans and other technical documents. Clearly written descriptions of interiors and exteriors complement detailed plans for each of 254 homes. The dream of owning a private home became a reality for many Americans in the prosperous years immediately following World War I. Remarkable for their spacious and well-lit rooms, ample closets, large basements, and eat-in kitchens, many of these models also offer sun rooms, fireplaces, open porches, and second-story "sleeping porches."
