"Hagiography for Junior High Students" according to Gio. It's hard to write a review of this awkward biography without slipping into a review of the ideas of Milton Friedman himself. I'm not a Friedman adulator, which Lanny Ebenstein clearly is. Indeed, his eagerness to defend Friedman's record -- on every front from interdepartmental strife at the U of Chicago to Friedman's role in the villainous Pinochet regime in Chile -- is the fundamental weakness of the book. I approached this book with both a sense of excitement and apprehension; excitement because of the subject,and apprehension having been disappointed by Ebenstein's previous works on Hayek.However, given the constraints of dealing at great length about every aspect of the life and works of Friedman in such a short work, this volume is very readable and provides an acceptable summary of the great man until someone provides . Friedman deserves a better biographer For several reasons this is not a very good book, the most important one being that the author cannot hide his admiration of Friedman. From the first to the last page, Milton Friedman is heralded as a great thinker, brilliant academic and heroic champion of the free market movement.
