DESCRIPTION:
"Simplistic and Holistic Introduction to Western Costume" according to C. Heiremans. The book is a wonderful visual survey of Western costume. The full-length figures and lack of text allows the reader to make first-hand observations and track trends. The descriptions at the end of each section are nice and unobtrusive. This book is a great display of how Western costume has evolved and what elements of fashion just keep coming back. I can think of dozens of activities for beginning costume students using this book. The most recent reviewer mentioned "terrible drawings," which I think is a bit unfair. The figures were not drawn by a master artist, and they don't look like they were. But John Peacock is a great fashion histo. Great drawings I am really enjoying this book. I have been collecting books on fashion history and while most books describe things there aren't enough pictures. This book is all pictures with little bits of descriptions. I especially love the glossary in the back of the book. It really helped me to understand what different terms meant (especially pertaining to clothing detail) and there were illustrations to go with most of the terms. My only complaint was from the 1920s on the array of styles was spotty. But I'm not too upset though, since if I really want more info on that all I have to do is look through old family photos or watch old movies. All in.
